How laser wart removal works

Laser heat shuts down the wart's blood supply.

A wart is a skin infection caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). It grows its own tiny blood vessels to feed itself. Fotona's 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser passes through thick, calloused skin and seals those vessels. Over the next few days the wart turns dark, dries out and falls away. For thick or raised warts, Kam adds Fotona's Er:YAG laser to remove the top layer first.

Plantar warts on the sole of the foot before laser wart removal in Vancouver
Warts we treat

Hands, feet, fingers and toes. Even stubborn ones.

Most people get at least one wart in their life. These are the types we remove most often.

01

Common warts

Hands and fingers

Rough, raised bumps on the hands and fingers. They spread through handshakes, doorknobs and shared towels.

02

Plantar warts

Soles of the feet

Flat, hard warts pushed inward by your body weight. They often have tiny black dots and hurt when you walk.

03

Mosaic warts

Clusters on the sole

Groups of plantar warts that join into one patch. Freezing and acid often fail on these, and laser works through the thick skin.

04

Toe warts

On and between the toes

Warts on the toes and the ball of the foot rub in your shoes. Kam treats each one in the same visit.

We also treat flat warts and warts around the nails. We do not treat male genital warts.

Before and after your session

Pre and post care for laser wart removal.

Follow these steps to help the treated spot heal fast and to stop new warts from starting.

Before your session

01

Tell Kam what you have tried

Freezing, acid, tape

Let Kam know about past treatments and how long you have had the wart. It helps plan your sessions.

02

Leave the wart alone

No picking or shaving

Don't pick, cut, file or shave over the wart before your visit.

03

Clean skin, no lotion

On the day

Wash the area and skip creams or lotion on the wart the day of your session.

04

Bring open shoes for foot warts

Sandals or loose shoes

Plantar warts feel tender for a day or two. Loose shoes make the walk home easier.

After your session

01

Expect the wart to darken

Day 1 to 3

The wart turns grey or dark as it dies. A small blister under it is normal. Don't pop it.

02

Keep it clean and covered

Simple bandage

Wash gently with soap and water and cover with a bandage until it heals.

03

Let it fall off on its own

Usually within 2 weeks

Don't pick the scab. The dead wart lifts off and new skin forms underneath.

04

Wear flip-flops in public showers

Gyms, pools, change rooms

Cover your feet in shared wet areas so you don't pick up the virus again.

05

Don't share towels or razors

Stop the spread

Use your own towel, nail clippers and razor so the virus doesn't spread to new spots or family members.

06

Keep skin healthy

Fewer cuts, fewer warts

Moisturize dry skin, stop biting nails and use a sharp razor. The virus gets in through small cuts.

Not sure if it's a wart? Book a free consult and Kam will check.

Wart removal FAQ

Questions people ask before booking.

13 answers on how laser wart removal works, what a session feels like and who it suits. Swipe through them.

01

About laser wart removal

Does laser wart removal work?

Yes, for most warts. In a series of 369 patients, long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser cleared 96% of warts, and only 3.27% came back. Deep plantar warts need more sessions than warts on the hands. See all 15 clinical studies.

02

About laser wart removal

Is laser better than freezing warts?

In a randomized trial of 150 patients, laser cured 54.1% of warts at 16 weeks against 46.7% for freezing, and laser warts cleared faster. Laser also did better on stubborn warts that freezing had not cleared.

03

About laser wart removal

Which warts do you treat?

Common warts on the hands and fingers, plantar warts on the soles, mosaic warts, toe warts, flat warts and warts around the nails. We do not treat male genital warts.

04

About laser wart removal

What causes warts?

The human papillomavirus (HPV). It spreads through skin contact and shared surfaces like towels, gym floors and pool decks, and gets in through small cuts. Warts are not caused by touching frogs.

05

About laser wart removal

Are warts contagious?

Yes. Warts spread from person to person and from one part of your body to another. Don't pick them, and use your own towel, razor and nail clippers.

06

Your treatment

How many sessions do I need?

Many warts clear in 1 session. In studies, the average was 1.3 to 2.2 sessions, and deep plantar or mosaic warts often need 3 or more. Kam tells you what to expect at your consult.

07

Your treatment

How long does laser wart removal take?

5 to 10 minutes for most warts. You go straight back to your day.

08

Your treatment

Does laser wart removal hurt?

You feel a hot snap with each laser pulse, and Kam uses cold air to cool the skin. In one study of 85 patients treated without anaesthetic, people rated the pain at 6 out of 10 during the few minutes of treatment.

09

Your treatment

What happens after laser wart removal?

The wart turns dark within a day or two, and a small blister forms under it in some people. Keep it clean and covered. The dead wart usually falls off within 2 weeks. See the full pre and post care steps.

10

Your treatment

Does laser wart removal leave a scar?

Studies on Fotona lasers report no scarring. Laser removes the wart without cutting the skin around it.

11

Your treatment

Can warts come back after laser?

Sometimes. The virus stays in your environment, so new warts can appear. Wear flip-flops in public showers, don't share towels and keep your skin free of cuts to lower your risk.

12

Cost and suitability

How much does laser wart removal cost in Vancouver?

Your price depends on how many warts you have, their size and how many sessions you need. Kam gives you an exact quote at your free consultation. BC MSP does not cover laser wart removal.

13

Cost and suitability

Who should not have laser wart removal?

Tell Kam if you have diabetes, poor circulation or nerve damage in your feet, or if you take medicine that weakens your immune system. A growth that bleeds, changes colour or grows fast needs a doctor's check first.
